CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Robert W. Allen, 81, of Cedar Rapids died Monday, June 22, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids with the Rev. Jonathan Offt officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lincoln (Neb.) Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
He was born June 13, 1928, in Otoe, Neb., to Everett and Velva (Paap) Allen. On May 9, 1954, he married Faye Brown in Riverdale, Neb.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Rebecca Allen of Kearney, Neb., and Penelope Allen and Pamela Allen, both of Cedar Rapids; son, Michael Allen of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Glen Allen and Heidi Allen and her fiancé, Jamie; great-grandchildren, Austin and Trenton Smith; stepgrandchildren, Rob Martin and Jim Martin and his wife, Stacy; and sisters-in-law, Beverly Allen of Vista, Calif., Treva Lehn and her husband, Dave, and Cheryl Ansbach, all of Kearney, and Naomi Brown of Fallon, Nev.
He attended Northeast High School in Lincoln and received a bachelor of arts degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and then his master's degree from Northern Colorado. He taught at Jefferson High School and coached sports there for 36 years. During that time he was the assistant coach for six state titles.
He was head basketball coach for Kirkwood Community College. He was elected to the Jefferson Hall of Fame and in 1987 was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his parents; identical twin brother, Richard; brothers-in-law, Wayne Brown and Terry Ansbach; and foster sister, Hilde Caserio.
A memorial fund has been established.
